Wanying Jin
Wanying Jin (b.1995) in Harbin, China lives and works in Shenzhen. Jin has been creating a constellation of mythical characters since 2016. Pursuing truth and beauty in their pure forms, Jin depicts figures that are ambiguous in gender, race, and cultural background – wandering souls whose stories are yet to be discovered by each viewer.
She looks back to Byzantine art and Netherlandish portrait paintings to reinvent a universal, androgynous, and expressive visual language. Love and desire are a fundamental current running through Jin’s works, and she aspires to provide her portraits as a channel for theaudience to see their own emotions, relationships, and longings.
Before becoming a painter, Jin first started as an illustrator with a portfolio of fashion illustrations. She received her M.A. degree in Illustration from Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester, England, and holds a B.A. in Illustration from the Arts University of Bournemouth, Poole, England.
