Nina Klein

Born in 1987 in Southfield, Michigan. Nina Klein currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She holds a BA from UCLA.

Using the female body to explore contemporary identity, Nina Klein subverts the male gaze, not in opposition to men, but from a position defined by women that places emphasis on their own merits. The minimal, abstract figures Klein creates pose open-ended questions about the expectations that we place on women. The work confronts the viewer in a way that often leads them to question their own views about gender roles and sexuality. Fluidity is central to Klein’s practice.

She works to reduce the figure to its most basic form, allowing the viewer to place his or her own subjective meaning onto the pieces. Through her practice, Klein investigates and explores the myths and stereotypes of women's roles, and the plethora of hypocritical messages that we receive from every possible source about our bodies.
